Information

Ct. House

Built in 1890 and is still operating in Hayesville

Clay County, is known for its pristine lake, majestic mountains, numerous sparkling creeks and streams and the Nantahala National Forest recreation areas. All provide many places for relaxation. Two thirds of Clay County is controlled by the United States Forest Service and Tennessee Valley Authority. It is bordered on the South by Lake Chatuge, the Tusquitee Mountains to the North, the Blue Ridge Mountains with the Appalachian Trail to the East and the Hiawassee River to the West.

Clay County, one of the smallest in North Carolina, is in the middle of the East's "Best White Water" rafting areas with Chattooga, Ocoee (96 Olympics) and the Nantahala Rivers all within an hour and a half drive. Lake Chatuge straddles the GA and NC state line with 130 Miles of shore line. From Hayesville, the cities of Atlanta, GA, Knoxville, TN and Asheville, NC are two hours and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one and a half hours away. Hayesville, a thriving town of 900+ is the county seat and is known for it's one blinking red light.

Having the Nantahala National Forest on two sides of the county allows many recreation access points such as Fires Creek, Tuni Gap road and Standing Indian. All are great places for picnics and long or short hikes. Standing Indian is also an Appalachian Trail access point.
